Cancer is a terrible disease. Chances are, you know someone with or affected by cancer. In Uganda, there is little awareness surrounding cancer and insufficient research on the disease. For these reasons, combined with high poverty rates and long distances to medical care, patients who arrive at the Uganda Cancer Institute are often at a very advanced stage of their disease. Treatment is difficult, especially due to limited resources.
The Uganda Child Cancer Foundation (UCCF) is a local non-profit organization that supports young cancer patients and their families in accessing comprehensive treatment. The UCCF provides emotional, social and financial support during treatment. It conducts awareness campaigns and maintains a "Hope Room" where patients can relax during their stay at the hospital. The services of the UCCF are a vital need in the community.
