Mary and her little brother and little sister live with her grandmother.  Her father has never been around and her mother is unable to provide for the children.  Her grandmother, Veronica, makes paper bead jewelry, but still struggles to earn enough money. 

Mary enjoys learning English and reading stories.  She dreams of becoming a doctor.  She’s a very caring and nurturing young girl and watches over her little brother to make sure he doesn’t cry.  Mary was named after her aunt, Ngamita Harriet, who had no children.  The family hoped, in this way, the aunt’s memory would live on through her.
